The Dune du Pilat
A remarkable natural site

Labeled Grand Site, this protected natural area partially belonging to the Conservatoire du Littoral covers more than 6,800 hectares, 110 meters high, about 600 meters wide and almost 3 km long. It is the highest dune in Europe which takes shape between forest, sand and ocean. It is home to exceptional flora and fauna with many birds and amazing plant species. Protected since 1930, the Dune is constantly changing, steadily advancing a few meters towards the forest. Its formation took place in several stages over 4,000 years. After cold and dry climatic phases with wind moving and gathering sand, followed by hot and rainy episodes which favored the expansion of the flora. In order to simplify access to the Dune, a staircase of 160 steps is set up each year between April and November. The Corniche stairs also allow you to reach the site, at the bottom of the dune.

Classified as a Grand Site de France, the Dune du Pilat is located at the entrance to the Arcachon basin. From its height of 110 m, it is the highest dune in Europe and offers very beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Landes. Each year, more than 2 million visitors climb the summit of this ideally preserved and protected natural site. To this day, this place is one of the most visited sites in France. It is located about an hour from the Landes Azur campsite.

What to do at the Dune du Pilat?

Many activities can be done with family or friends: walks, exhibitions, entertainment... In the summer season, you can enjoy the sumptuous landscapes at one of the observation posts of the Dune du Pilat. Commented walks of one hour will allow you to discover the diversity of the heritage of the Dune du Pilat between fauna, flora, geology or history. Also take advantage of guided hikes to the Dune du Pilat and the Banc d'Arguin, a free stroll on the interpretive trail, an outing at sunset or even a storytelling walk. Different walking routes along the Dune of about 6.5 km starting for example from the reception area of ​​the site, are also accessible. Various workshops and games for the little ones (treasure hunt, goose…), as well as a host of activities for children are also offered.
