The Arcachon Bay offers a wide range of colours with blue-green water in contrast to the white sand of the beaches. Edged by small oyster harbours, the bay has managed to preserve a traditional charm of the 19th century, when Arcachon became a popular beach resort under Napoleon III. Located south from the bay, this town is set in an exceptional nature of dunes, a lagoon and edged by the ocean that finds its way between the sandbanks housed by thousands of birds. From the Dune of Pyla (114 metres high), you have a magnificent view on the region.
On the edge of the lake of Biscarrosse, at the heart of Europe’s biggest forest and at just 10 km from the Atlantic Ocean, Biscarosse is an absolute must for those who love water sports. The Dune of Pyla, listed as a ‘Grand Site de France’, is the highest dune of Europe. It culminates to 110 metres facing the Atlantic Ocean, and stretches over more than 2,7 km south from the Arcachon Bay. All through the summer, Les Landes live to the pace of their ‘ferias’. These red and white festivals take place all along the summer. Their highlight is the Landes bull course.
